Amazing Things Can Happen When You "Change Up" your Daily Routine...

Updated: Dec 6, 2021

"Improvement is impossible without change." Christian Yelich

As human beings, we have been conditioned by society to accept the notion that we must always "be on schedule." We wake up every morning and begin our usual daily routine... for many of us, this consists of immediately turning on the TV; or grabbing our cellphones and tapping into all of our favorite forms of social media before we even get out of bed. After spending more time than we should scrolling and watching cute animal videos; or learning 5 quick ways to cook a week night dinner in less than 10 minutes; or being a victim of click bait ads (you know it, we have all done it!), we suddenly realize that JEEZ! We should have jumped in the shower 30 freakin' minutes ago! Ha ha. That being said, we finally get up and go to the bathroom, wash up, get dressed, eat breakfast, have our coffee, brush our teeth, take our vitamins, etc. Not everybody does the very same things to start their day, but it's safe to say that we all run on auto-pilot when it comes time to get moving.

Have you ever asked yourself, "Why must I always have the same routine? Are my morning rituals actually beneficial to how I experience my day?"

Most of us do not even think about that question. But I ask this for a very good reason, and if you are taking the time to read this (thank you, by the way!), then I would like to respectfully challenge you to step out of your comfort zone, and try something new during ANY PART of your daily routine. You are probably asking yourself, "now why would I want to do that?" -right? Well, there is a very good, scientifically proven reason why. Don't get me wrong, I can appreciate that having a routine, at times, is not necessarily a bad thing. But many of these daily activities that we are accustomed to have become habits; and as a result, your body is dragging you into the same predictable future - based on what you have been repeatedly doing in the same familiar past . You will think the same thoughts.... and then make the same choices... that lead to the same behaviors... that create the same experiences... that produce the same emotions. Over time, you've created a set of hardwired neurological networks in the brain and you have emotionally conditioned your body to live in the past - and that past ultimately becomes your future. If we are not happy with some aspect of our current lifestyle, how can we expect things to change for the better if we cannot break free from the repetitive patterns of re-creating our past, day after day?

So, what can we do to try to change the same old outcomes? Here is a tough example... step into the unknown. Do not get on your phone first thing in the morning. Instead, try to get straight out of bed and give your pets some extra morning attention; or turn on a favorite song that makes you feel like you want to dance, and stretch your body and start moving about to get your blood circulating; or immediately make your bed as soon as you get our of it, and let some natural light into the room to get your eyes adjusted and your body moving. These may all seem like trivial, simple gestures, but believe it or not, one teensy little positive adjustment towards focusing on the present moment can work wonders for your brain and body!

When we change our habits/routines, we change the way that our energy flows. Where we place our attention is where we place our energy. Our brain suddenly says, "uh, whaaaaaaat?" and neurons that have been dormant will begin to awaken and fire up, creating new energy flow patterns, and thus creating unknown outcomes for our future. I can tell you from experience that it's going to feel strange and awkward at first... but that's exactly how the magic begins to enter your life!

These small changes will help you to become more present, and live in the moment. It will begin a momentum of positive change in your life, that you have never dreamed could be possible.
